The times they are A-Changin’: While active funds battle to survive — ETFS are emerging as winners.

In this talk, Petko will analyse recent trading dynamics of fixed income Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) in an environment of increasing US interest rates. Given the current market microstructure of market fragmentation, financial innovations and destructive technologies, the speaker will address how resilient is the fixed income EFT market in such a fast-changing environment. He will show that there is little support to indicate that fixed income ETFs, through their use of bonds, are a source of additional risk in bonds fire sales when interest rates have been going up. In addition, the reason for ETSs emergence as winners in traditional assets management will also be discussed.

Speaker:

  • Petko Kalev, Professor, Finance, La Trobe University

13:45 – Session 6: Factor Indexing – A “new” investing framework for advisers and institutions when allocating risk and capital

Smart beta (or factor investing) is all the buzz these days in financial services. If up to 80% of a manager’s active return can be explained by exposures to systematic factors (source: MSCI).

What is the potential impact for investment management and portfolio advice?

In this session Tim will look at the evolution of smart beta indexes off the back of decades of academic theory, and why the rapid growth of the ETF industry globally has combined to deliver an expanding and relevant range of investment tools for all investors.

Tim will test the rationale of factor indexes and factor investing, and the assess the potential impact of constructing and managing portfolios for clients using this “new investment framework”.

Speaker:
  • Tim Bradbury, VP, Client Coverage, MSCI

Speaker:

  • Nicki Ashton, Head of Strategic Partnerships, Russell Investments

16:30 – What’s behind the rise of passive?

As the long-term benefits of passive investing continue to mount, more and more Australian investors are incorporating index-based strategies into their portfolios. While the Australian ETF Industry has grown at an annual clip of 30% since 2004, there is still room for continued growth. Which strategies are investors implementing and could index innovation be the key to narrowing the active vs. passive gap?

  • What SPIVA® (S&P Indices Vs. Active) data tells us about the persistent effectiveness of indexing
  • Is active management a zero sum game?
  • The importance of dispersion in measuring the potential opportunity set

Speaker:

  • Craig Lazzara, MD and Global Head of Index Investment Strategy, S&P Indices.
